 Oily Skin Woes
« Thread Started on Feb 7, 2005, 2:43pm »

Hello All,
I honestly thought I was the only person in the world with excessively oily skin. I don't know of ANYONE with skin like mine. I've had excessively oily skin since I was a teen. It has been such a thorn in my side. I literally have to powder my face about every 20 minutes! Does anyone else have it this bad?
I avoid a social life as much as I can to keep people from making fun of me. I was practically tortured by my school mates when I was younger. I know I should let go of this, but I'm still living it! You should see how people stare at me when I'm shopping or at an event. I have two children and I don't want them to know I'm miserable and insecure, so I have to pretend that I'm ok and go about my life. Sometimes I think God hates me.
I posted a reply on another topic with regards to Paul admitting that he has acne and how he feels like a prisoner because of it. Well, I've cleared up my acne, but I still have the oily skin. I still feel like a prisoner. Sometimes I think that I'd rather have pimples than the oily skin. I want to put on my makeup and still look the same an hour later. I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. I've tried many, many things, on my own and through my dermatologist. Yesterday, I bought Vitamin B-5, 1000 mg. I'm hoping and praying it'll help. I'm interested to know if this has worked for anyone else. I didn't see a recent post about it's effectiveness. What about the Jane Iredale makeup? I only wear oil free concealer. I don't use foundation anymore. Since living here in Florida, it gets too hot to wear foundation plus, my acne cleared up and I only have to wear the concealer under my eyes and around the sides of my nose. I use MAC Blotting powder (I found that this one doesn't cake as much). This is it. I'm using MD Forte cleanser for oily skin and a sunscreen recommended by my derm. I also use spirnolactone topically around my mouth and on my chin per my derm. Oh, I also use Clinac O.C. to help w/ the oiliness. It gives me a couple of extra minutes. Nothing to write home about.
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has skin that is as oily as mine, how your controlling it and how you've handled it in general. I so need to chat with someone who understands my problem.

Hi Kimmie

This is a quick one from me ... I have recently started using the Jane Iredale Absence oil control which has an SPF of 15 so it also works as a sunblock and I find that has helped more than anything I've ever used. I use Corn Silk translucent powder (with parabens yuk) on top of it and that's all I use and my skin looks fine. Sometimes in the afternoon I'll get a little shine but I just use a bit more Corn Silk and I'm good to go. My skin isn't blotchy or discoloured.

I've tried everything over the years and not much works. I also am on the B5 supplements though I couldn't tell you if it works. If you do use any B5 supplement, my kinesiologist says that you need to also take Vitamin B complex as it won't work otherwise.

This is me for now as it's rushed ... hope it helps a little. I do understand how you feel and I'm sure many others too, especially Rianne, who hopefully will post you a reply soon as I suggested Jane Iredale's Absence oil control recently.

Thx
Just Me

Hi Kimmie - JM has just told me about your post and knew that I would empathise with it - definitely !! :( Oily skin and acne have been the bane of my life for longer than I dare to remember :-[. My skin is just so unbelievably oily - within 30 minutes (max) of washing my face I am covered in oil again. :( The worst thing (or one of them) is trying to keep make-up on - at least if your make-up stays on you can face the world a bit !! Also it took me ages to find a make-up that could "cope" with the oil - a lot of foundations and powders turn an orangey colour on my skin because of the grease (lovely !! NOT !!!!) Anyway, through trial and plenty of errors I found a foundation that stayed true colour-wise and powder too (Christian Dior). BUT it still doesn't address the oil problem. I just HATE looking so shiny all the time - it makes you feel dirty somehow - like it's ages since you washed. Grrrrrr !! >:( At the moment I'm trying the Jane Iredale Absence but it doesn't seem to be working for me. I think my skin produces sooooo much oil NOTHING can cope with it. I must have tried a million products over the years but my skin just LOVES being oily. For the last week I've been using a face wash called OligoPur by Phytomer available from Mankind UK mail order. It's a great face wash and leaves my skin feeling really squeaky clean - it's certainly one of the best I've ever used. I am going to order their Anti-Shine gel because I think it may be worth a go - if it works on MY skin it work on anyones I tell ya !!!!!!!!!! ;D For years and years I used to buy Clean & Clear oil absorbing sheets (Johnson and Johnson) and they did a great job at "mopping up" the oil without disturbing your make-up too much. But then they stopped selling them in England & I was sooooo disappointed !!! ??? Then I read about someone using cigarette papers as "oil moppers" :) and eureka - they worked just as well !!!! In the interim I did try the papers from Chanel but they were useless. Maybe it would be worth giving the cig papers a go - until we find something that will stop us producing so much horrible oil like this. Over the years I have tried so many things for my skin - I've had problem skin (in a BIG way) for over 30 years - if I haven't tried it, well - it aint bin invented !!!!! :) I can't believe how much money I've spent and how far I've travelled to find a cure for my acne and a solution for my scarring - it's an ongoing nightmare and I hate, hate, hate it. Anyway, I've rambled on too long (no change there then !!! ;)) - hope this helps a little, even if it just makes you feel like you're not alone Kimmie. Also HUGE HUGE thanks to JM for this site - I know I'm always saying it but you are just one terrific gal for giving us this site !!! There have been times when I don't know where I would have been without ya !!! Love Rianne x

Hello!
Just Me and Rianne, thanks for your posts. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I was told that my hours here are being cut back, so I've been busy job hunting!
I still using the Vitamin B5. I haven't seen a change yet in the amount of oil my skin is producing, but I'm willing to stay on it for a while. I am so thankful for this web site! Yep, I now know that I'm not alone with my skin condition. I'm just sorry that we don't live near each other! I'd love to hang out with people who don't analyze my face while they're talking to me!
I'm still using tissues to mop up the oil when no one is looking or when I can scoot off to the bathroom. I still want to try the Jane Iredale makeup, but I want to give the Vitamin B5 a little more time.
Oops...Gotta run.. I'll write more later!
Ciao,
Kimmie

Hello, again.
Rianne, how are you doing with the new cleanser? Is it keeping the oil at bay? Have you ever tried the B5 supplements? I know that Just Me said she doesn't know if they're working. I don't see any difference yet either.
Just me, is the Absence still working for you?
I read about a laser treatment for acne that supposedly works by affecting the oil glands. As a result, the skin produces less sebum. Have you heard of this? I called a local doctor's office and inquired about it. I was told that the laser "seemed" to inhibit oil production, thus preventing new acne lesions and healing existing ones, BUT, she would not recommend it for someone who only needs help with oily skin. She said she couldn't guarantee that it would help me with that. Last year I went to an endocrinologist to see if I had a hormonal imbalance, but no dice. Apparently, my hormones ARE causing my oily skin, something about testerone and androgens, but they are not out of balance? Someone help me here! Aren't there enough of us out there to have someone research this a little further to find a cure? I don't think this problem is being taken seriously. I haven't had a breakout in months, but I can't face the world without my blotting powder! I constantly have this on my mind, especially when I have to speak w/ someone. Soon I'll be going on job interviews and I know that half and hour into the interview, I'm going to be a greasy mess.

Hi Kimmie

Yes, the Jane Iredale Absence Oil Control is still working for me though not as much as it used to. It's still far much better when I use the Absence than when I don't as I really notice the difference in skin tone etc ie it looks more matt most of the day with the Absence Oil Control.
[
I don't use any other make up under the Absence - I'm not sure if that makes a difference in my results to Rianne's. I only use Corn Silk on top of it (which urrgh has parabens and I'm hoping to switch to Jane Iredale's powder this weekend - I ordered Radiance which was on back order.

I'm hoping that using Natural Woman's Natural Progesterone will help regulate my hormones. You'll find my link on that in one of the threads - I don't have to find it for you right now as this is a quickie. That may help you? It only contains natural ingredients (I checked them out!).

Someone else out there must have some ideas I know! Oily skin is a bummer. I know Ian uses products from Burt Bees (though I'd need to find his thread to find out exactly which products he uses) and also to find out how he keeps his oily skin under control after using his cleanser. Perhaps he'll read this in between classes and write in soon!! Let's hope!

Anyone else, we'd be glad to hear your thoughts as I'm sure we're not the only ones who suffer from oily skin!

Thx

Hi Kimmie, Rianne et all

For what it's worth, I'm currently trying out something new for my oily skin which seems to be working make up wise.

My skin can't take too much make up as it tends to look cakey and recently I've tried the Jane Iredale compact powder which includes concealer and SPF etc and I end up looking like a ghost (yuk!) and the colouring is just too ikky and at £30 a compact, it's an expensive mistake.

I took a chance in purchasing some Organic, preservative free Miessence Mineral Foundation Powder - Tanned from http://www.theremustbeabetterway.co.uk/S...._Care_Page2.htm along with some Miessence Translucent Powder which were fairly cheap and so far I love the colour on my skin, how it looks which is fairly natural and matches my skin tone which is (yellow - being half asian) and the oil control seems to be getting better - though I'm still using the Jane Iredale Absence Oil Control as a base and for SPF protection.

Usually I have to blot several times a day in the ladies though right now I no longer blot and just use a loose brush and brush on the translucent Miessence Powder which just takes away the oil without a cakey look.

Blemishes can't be hidden though and you'd need to wear concealor underneath and/or foundation if you so choose. I also found that using a mist spray sets the mineral foundation is place after and also helps the oil control.

It's early days yet as it's been a few days only and at times the skin plays tricks and behaves for a few days when using a new product and then the oil flow starts again .. I'll keep you posted!

Best
